Honeywell T10 Thermostat Review: The Perfect Smart Thermostat for Your Home

I’ve always been intrigued by the idea of having a smart home. The peace of mind, simplicity, security, and cost savings of having a connected home seems like an euphoric state for any dad that owns a home. We’ve had Google Home devices in our house for years, but the only thing we’ve ever connected it to was our family Spotify account. I really wanted to make a jump into new smart home technology.

While my kids are still not tall enough to reach the thermostat, the average single-family home in the United States spends about 53 percent of its energy-related expenditures on heating and cooling. Budgets are always tight, so I set my focus on where so much of all of our monthly expenses go – better managing our heating and cooling systems usage with a smart thermostat.

I did some research and even talked with my trusted local heating and air conditioning company where I live (shout-out Williams Comfort Air!) and landed on Honeywell Thermostats. Once I dug into all of the Honeywell smart thermostats they have on the market, I landed on the Honeywell T10 Pro Smart Thermostat with REDlink. I don’t consider myself Mr. Fixer by any means, but I have installed a battery back-up sump pump and replaced a belt on our clothes dryer before so I felt confident I could give this a go. Yes, there are wires. Yes, this controls your HVAC system. Yes, if you do this wrong you can break a bunch of really expensive equipment. There’s your disclaimer.

The most important step is the first one: shut off the power to your HVAC systems at your breaker box. Once you get your old thermostat off the wall and wiring harness exposed, the best advice I can give you is to take a photo of the wiring configuration on your phone. This way you can refer back to how to set up the wiring connections properly and not guess off memory.

Luckily, I was replacing an older Honeywell thermostat so my wiring setup was exactly the same. If yours looks different or you’re just not confident in doing it correctly, don’t risk it. You can cause serious damage to your furnace, heat pump, or air conditioner. No shame in calling a professional HVAC technician to do the installation.

Once you get the Honeywell T10 smart thermostat installed and flip the breakers back on, the thermostat will walk you through a very straight forward setup process. In a few minutes, you’ll have the basic settings in place like your run schedule, temperature settings, whether you have a humidifier or not, connecting to your home’s Wi-Fi, and more.

One of the perks of the Honeywell T10 are the smart home sensors. These little white boxes stick to walls in different rooms around the house that you sync with your thermostat to provide a more accurate average temperature for your entire home.

They also come with motion sensors so the system will know if someone is in the room and if the thermostat should heat up or cool off now that certain rooms are occupied.

Our box came with one sensor I added to our master bedroom. We have high ceilings so it can get a little chilly at night. This way our system will keep running to bring our bedroom temperature warmer to the desired temp we want.

Honeywell Smart Home App + Thermostat Connection

Once I had the thermostat running on a schedule and had the master bedroom sensor connected, it was time to download the Honeywell Smart Home app. This was the part I was most looking forward to. I always hated going on vacations and thinking how I had to adjust our entire thermostat run schedule for an empty house, only to change it back once we returned. It felt like such a waste of energy, and expensive to heat an empty house!

The app basically acts just like your thermostat, like you were standing in front of it at your house. Anything of the temperature, fan, run schedule, humidity, ventilation, etc. settings you can adjust at the thermostat you can adjust from the app. If you want to dive into specific manufacturer settings or its installer settings, those you can only adjust from the thermostat itself.

After you get your Honeywell T10 thermostat connected to your home’s Wi-Fi, then you can download the app and pair it to your device. It took me a couple tries to get the two in sync so don’t get frustrated if you can’t connect on the first try. You’ll need to create a Honeywell/Resideo account and give some information in order to make the magic happen.

Once connected, you can work your thermostat from anywhere! There’s a geo-fencing setting so that it can detect when you’re en route home and kick the HVAC system on before your arrival. It’s very cool how much power you have with your HVAC system from your phone with this smart thermostat.
