Gardening Gifts for Your Dad He’ll Really Dig

If you haven’t heard, plant fatherhood is trending.

Okay, we won’t call it “fatherhood,” but it’s true that many people took up plant ownership during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Perhaps you’re a dad whose thumb has greened recently, or you’re shopping for someone who has long been a lover of all things plant.

One thing is certain: if you’re not into plants and gardening yourself, it can be very difficult to know what to buy someone.

This is where I come in. I’m sharing the best gifts for dads who love gardening and the best gifts for dads who can’t get enough plants.

I’ll admit, I am one of the people who jumped on-board the indoor plant train within the past couple of years.

We have around a half-dozen potted plants plus air plants throughout the house, and it’s my happy job to keep them thriving. This will also be our third year with a raised vegetable garden.

(shh! Don’t tell the HOA!)

While our ponytail palm gets the occasional brown-tip, and a few of our carrots grew to be gigantic and tasteless, I can say I feel pretty qualified to write this list based on a number of green success stories.

I hope it helps you find the perfect gift for a dad who you love who just so happens to love gardening!

1) Kids Garden Tools

Sometimes the best gift for dad is a little help. This kids gardening set is both aesthetically pleasing and functional. I like that it’s made of silicone instead of plastic, and also that it comes with an apron, as gardening is not the neatest hobby. Plus (spoiler!), kids are more likely to actually help if they have cool tools.

2) Durable Gardening Gloves

If dad truly likes to garden, that means he needs more than one pair of gardening gloves. This set is reviewed highly and comes with six pairs, which should get dad through the whole season and then some.

3) Stainless Steel Gardening Tools

Let’s face it; some gardening tools are too cheap to get through hard dirt and rocks. These tools are made of quality materials, including stainless steel and a non-slip rubber grip. This heavy duty set is ready to stand up to any gardening project dad has.

4) Garden Kneeler and Stool

If you’ve spent any time in the garden, you probably know that it can do a number on your back. Let dad have a rest while working with this garden kneeler and stool. I like that it is so compact and would be easy to carry to different spots in the garden. The tool pouch and included gloves are another bonus.

5) Homemade Bamboo Bee Hive

Assuming dad doesn’t have a bee allergy, this beautiful handmade bee house may be a great gift. It’s especially relevant if your guy understands the volatile situation bees are in, and wants to help them survive and thrive. Having bees around can also be beneficial for some gardens.

6) Garden Weeding Robot

This is a crazy cool gadget for dads who love both gardening and technology. Solar-powered and compact, this garden weeding robot helps keep gardens clear of weeds. This one is made particularly for vegetable gardens and touts impressive ease-of-use.

7) Outdoor Moon Globe Garden Décor

While some lawn ornaments are kitschy, this one is both modern and frankly, cool. Featuring a waterproof LED lit moon and surrounding medal crescent, this one is an eye-catcher. This makes a great gardening gift for any garden-loving dad.

8) Dinosaur Eating Gnomes Statue

Of all the gift ideas on this list, this one is one of my favorites. Any other Jurassic Park fans out there? Anyway, this is a statue of a dinosaur chomping down on some gnomes. Sure, gnomes are a classic garden fixture. But in dad’s garden, they don’t stand a chance!

9) Grow Damnit Garden Sign

If dad’s kids are a little older (or he doesn’t mind a swear word or two), this sign may be the perfect addition. As a plant owner who has had some successes and some failures, I can attest to dads thinking, “grow, damnit,” in their heads; why not have it in the garden?

10) Metal Garden Hose

Most people don’t think about upgrading their garden hose unless there’s a hole, but let me tell you, an upgrade like this 100-foot metal garden hose is something to get excited about. Durable, flexible and long enough to get to where you need to be in the yard, this hose both looks elegant and like a workhorse. It’s available in shorter sizes too, if dad’s garden is small.

11) Sprinkler Timer

Watering is key to most plants’ survival, but dad’s a busy guy. This sprinkler timer ensures his garden remains moist without requiring he stick around. It can be set to pinpoint watering duration and how often watering should occur.

12) In-Ground Automatic Sprinkler System

Having a professional irrigation system put in works well, but it can be costly. This option, an in-ground automatic sprinkler system from Rain Bird, finds the balance between automating irrigation, and installing and maintaining a simple, do-it-yourself system. This one covers most medium-sized yards (between 1,000 to 3,000 square feet). Bonus points if you help dad with the install!

13) Above Ground Irrigation System

If dad is looking for a simpler irrigation solution than the option above, this above ground irrigation system may be the ticket. At a more affordable price point, this option covers a little less ground, at a max of 1,638 square feet, but it is easy to install and generated some really positive user reviews.

14) Impact Sprinkler Tripod

Don’t underestimate the power of a sprinkler upgrade. If dad’s current sprinkler is on the ground, it likely isn’t dispersing water as far out as this guy can. The Orbit impact sprinkler on a tripod is tip-resistant, heavy-duty and sprays up to 90 feet in diameter.

15) Beginners Raised-Bed Gardening Book

This book offers tips and advice for raised garden bed success. There are unique challenges to any gardening environment, and it’s nice that this book focuses solely on the raised bed. This book is targeting gardening beginners, so it’s a good fit if dad is just dipping his toes into raised bed gardening.

16) Hand Rake Leaf Scoops

These are cool. Like, really cool. We all want to make leaf raking easier, and if you’ve ever tried to pick up leaves with your hands you know as many end up in the bag as do flying away. These hand rake grabbers not only make you look a bit like the Hulk, but they bring efficiency to leaf pick-up.

17) Variety Garden Seeds Pack

Nudge dad to try something new in his garden this year with this 33 variety garden seed pack. This includes enough seeds for multiple seasons and will help dad grow cabbage, carrots, beets, tomatoes and so much more. Buying in bulk also can help with seed affordability.

18) Herbal Tea Seed Pack

If dad appreciates a spot of tea over a cup of Joe, this gift is ideal. Help dad grow his own flowers and plants that he can then turn into tea. This kit offers organic, indoor seeds. And for those who haven’t ever made tea from scratch (raises hand), there is a helpful ebook with tips and recipes.

19) Stand-Up Weed Picker

You want a tidy garden, but you don’t want to bend up and down to pull weeds one hundred times a week. This handy garden gadget makes the job of getting the garden weed-free easier. And dad will appreciate that. I own one of these myself, and it’s a real back saver.

20) Indoor/Outdoor Planter (Set of Two)

Let dad show off his gardening handy work with this pair of sleek planters. These guys are modern-looking, weather resistant and made of 70 percent recycled materials. At 30-inches, they’re large enough for a wide variety of plants, and they are more affordable than other options in this size range.

21) So Excited We Wet Our Plants Rusty Garden Sign

Like the hoe sign above, this one is another sign that brings humor to the garden. If dad has somewhere to hang this, like the side of a barn or house, or along a fence, this might be a great gift idea. Affordable at just under $40, this gift will be sure to make him smile for years to come. And maybe the neighbors, too!

22) Metal Hawk Garden Sculpture

My father-in-law instilled the need in my wife to call out anytime she spots a hawk. (Yes this is true.) Make your neighbors point and yell “hawk” with this metal hawk garden sculpture. The sculpture itself is quite impressive, standing more than 10 inches tall, with laser-cut details and glass eyes.
